VPN Access

All members of Fulda University can set up a secure (encrypted) connection with the network of Fulda University and the Internet by using VPN (Virtual Private Network)

VPN only runs in “full tunnel mode”. On starting the VPN connection, all data transfer – also your other private data – runs via Fulda University’s VPN infrastructure.

Some IT resources (e.g. home drives, library data bases, etc,) at Fulda University are only available on Fulda University’s Intranet. In order to use these resources outside Fulda University (e.g. at home, at conferences or conventions at other institutions etc.) you need VPN.

You connect to our VPN server, authenticate yourself as a member of Fulda University by entering your user name and password and, from this time on, your computer – albeit no physical part of Fulda University’s network – counts as part of the university network.

For VPN access, you need to fulfil the following requirements:

  • PC that is connected to Fulda University’s WLAN or – outside the university – a functioning Internet connection.
    • The operating system should be up to date.
    • An up-to-date virus scanner should be installed on your PC.
  • You need a valid Novell account (i.e. an fd number) for authentication.
  • The web-based installation requires an Internet browser, e.g. Firefox (with Java) or IE (with ActiveX).

As a rule, you don’t need VPN if you:

  • are already in the network of Fulda University (LAN or WLAN)
  • are using a PV pool at Fulda University
  • want to send emails using your university email address
